Castlerea’s own Aoife O’Rourke opened her campaign at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool on Saturday evening with a dominant performance.
The double Olympian, four-time continental champion, and co-captain of the Irish team secured victory in the 75kg category against Monika Langerova of the Czech Republic at the M&S Bank Arena, winning by unanimous decision.
Aoife controlled the opening round with accurate punching and superior movement, taking the round on all five judges’ scorecards. Her dominance only grew in the second, forcing a couple of standing counts as her opponent struggled under the pressure. By the third, there was no doubt about the result as Aoife eased through to the quarter-finals, where she will face either Italy’s Melissa Gemini or Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad on Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, her sister Lisa O’Rourke will be in action in the 70kg category this evening (Sunday). Lisa takes on Shirleidis Orozco Martinez of Colombia in the Last 16, with coverage beginning at 6pm. Lisa’s fight is bout 6 of the evening session and is expected around 7.30pm.
