There was huge pride in Castlerea this today as Castlerea Community School’s U19 boys basketball team were crowned All-Ireland B League Champions, following a brilliant win over Kildare Town Community School in the final at Neptune Stadium in Cork.
In a tightly fought and exciting contest, the Castlerea lads showed real grit, teamwork and composure to secure a 50–45 victory, bringing home an All-Ireland title for the school and the wider community.
The team, managed by Thomas Callaghan, led for much of the game but were pushed hard by a determined Kildare side who never let the contest drift away. Castlerea built a solid lead during the third quarter, but Kildare mounted a strong comeback, cutting the gap to just two points going into the final quarter.
When it mattered most, Castlerea Community School found another gear. A strong run at the start of the final quarter gave them some breathing space, and while Kildare threatened again late on, the Castlerea players showed great composure, defending well and converting crucial scores and free throws to see out the win.
This victory is especially sweet for the group, who have come close on previous occasions. Having experienced narrow defeats in earlier All-Ireland campaigns, the team’s perseverance and hard work paid off in Cork, as they finally got their hands on the title.
The win was built on strong defensive work, great teamwork and a willingness to battle for every rebound and loose ball. It was a full squad effort, with players stepping up at key moments throughout the game.
To mark this fantastic achievement, a homecoming is organised for the team and their manager, with a warm welcome awaiting them back at Castlerea Community School at approx 8.30pm on Thursday evening (26th Feb 2026). It will be a lovely opportunity for students, families and the wider community to come together and celebrate a moment that will be remembered for years to come.
