There was great pride in Castlerea this week as Benny O’Connell of Benny’s Deli was honoured at the Irish Restaurant Association Connaught Awards, taking home the Local Food Hero Award.
This is a very special and well-deserved recognition for Benny, who has been at the heart of hospitality in Castlerea for decades. Benny’s Deli celebrates 45 years in business this May, while Benny himself is approaching an incredible 60 years working in the hospitality industry.
The Local Food Hero Award recognises individuals who not only excel in hospitality but also play a key role in supporting and promoting local food producers and businesses. Anyone who knows Benny will understand just how fitting this award is.
Over the years, Benny has been deeply involved in community and enterprise development, particularly through his work with the Castlerea Enterprise Hub. His contribution has helped shape initiatives such as An Chistin Cookery School and the An Chistin Food Hub, which continue to support and nurture local food businesses.
The Food Hub is already home to a number of successful local producers, including Solas Desserts, Noble Ice Cream and Roscommon Chocolates, with plans to expand further and provide opportunities for new food start-ups in the coming years.
Benny’s dedication to his craft, his support of others, and his ongoing contribution to the local community make this award all the more meaningful.
From everyone in Castlerea, congratulations Benny – a fantastic achievement and very well deserved.
