St. Michael’s Special school was sanctioned in 1981. Following the sustained efforts of volunteers from the County Roscommon Association with the Principal, Sr. Jacinta Cullinane, a new purpose-built facility was opened in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon 1990. First established in 1979, St. Michael’s is based in the heart of Castlerea town. The Sisters of Mercy donated the site and Sister Jacinta Cullinane, School Principal, ensured that the school would be open, welcoming and attractive for children and parents.
